Cyril Aphrem Karim, who took the patriarchal name Ignatius Aphrem II, was elected the 123rd Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch on May 29 2014, following the death of Patriarch Zakka I. He was enthroned at St. Ephrem’s Monastery in Maarat Saidnaya, near Damascus, and serves as the head of the Syriac Orthodox Church.
