About J.
J. West Martin was a Regent of the University of California who, in 1854, purchased the land that became Rancho Santa Rita on the eastern edge of the Livermore Valley. He built the original barn around 1860, establishing the foundation of the ranch that would later be carried forward by his stepson Thomas D. Carneal III and the Reinstein family.
