Wayne Monk is the founder of Lexington Barbecue, established in 1962. He began his career as a carhop at a Lexington, NC barbecue restaurant and later worked under Warner Stamey. At age 26, he purchased a parcel of land beside US Highway 29/70, added to the building, and opened Lexington Barbecue #1, which remains on the same property today.
