Robert L. Friedly was the chairperson of the administrative subcommittee that, in 1970, selected the chalice with a St. Andrew's cross as the symbol of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He helped lead the committee that adopted the symbol at the 1971 General Assembly.
