About Bessie
Bessie Bates founded Bates Nursery & Garden Center in 1932 during the Great Depression, convincing her husband Byron to mortgage their home to build a greenhouse. She later opened Bates Florist with her sons Earl and Wilburn, eventually leading to the creation of Earl B. Bates Nursery, which has been in operation for 82 years.
